Can I take a guitar carrying?

I will fly on an international flight. Can I bring my guitar as exercise or do I need to check it? Need it to be in a hard case or a soft one will be okay?

I flew with a guitar, a couple of times … I took it as a driver .. I would not trust them with it lol … plus my case is soft … I have never had any problems with taking it as an exercise, and it fits just fine above the main room, you just need to make sure no one puts their bags on the … on my last flight I was looking for candy in my backpack that had my guitar … and then suddenly the guitar fell from space on the guy sleeping underneath XD I still remember everything in slow motion:)
