What is the best way to clean off sticky stuff children from an acoustic guitar?

Look I am no expert, but I have a beautiful handmade guitar I bought in Mexico … have a white lacquer? finish. Just a cheapo I plunk around on … yet the neighbors kids got hold of it, what I was not looking and now I got something sticky and red around the sound hole … what is a safe way to clean it up?? 're not just hot soapy water??
