Question about a guitar-rack system?

So I've been curious about rack systems, but I am a little confused by them. First and foremost want a rack system basically just replace your amp head, when you customize your own pre-amp, power amp and effects processor combinations? Or do you just use the rack together with your original head / cab setup?

You could do either, but most of the time people change their amp head with a rack containing a pre amp and power amp. There are some advantages to doing this, but I personally think that if you use a good quality amplifier, either a head / cab or a combo, and a good guitar you need not much else. A Vox AC30 never fails me.
