There are Poisonous Chinese Drywall in North Carolina?

I asked all the time. Are there poisonous Chinese Drywall here in North Carolina and more specifically in Charlotte NC? When I is a home inspector in Charlotte NC, which is a pretty valid question. Before I answer that although I feel it is necessary to explain what the problem is with the drywall.

During the housing boom of 2004-2006 (some sources say, 2001-2008), some drywall contractors drywall imported from China. This is a little unusual to import drywall because it is so heavy and expensive to ship. The reason for that was what made sense even at this time was the high demand for drywall caused by the housing boom in the time. The demand exceeded the U.S. domestic supply. This requirement was further increased by several hurricanes. The drywall was obviously sent to ports, and most of the drywall has been found so far have been found in the vicinity of the ports on the Gulf Coast, Southeast ports, including Charleston, SC and Wilmington NC.
Drywall is made of gypsum, which naturally contains sulfur compounds. It is believed that the drywall from China were stopped at sea. If the plaster is exposed to moisture it may cause sulfides in the plaster off the gas. The drywall started installed in the houses begin to deploy these sulfides. These sulfides cause serious and rapid oxidation of the metal. This has caused the air condition coils to rust out prematurely metal plumbing pipes for rust and electrical fixtures and outlets to rust prematurely. Apart from physical problems associated with the drywall there are some health concerns too. These have been identified as some of the drywall causing problems. People exposed to this toxic drywall include respiratory irritation, headaches, eye irritation, nose bleed cough and difficulty breathing.

What are the warning signs that you may have toxic Chinese drywall in your house? Was your house built between 2001 and 2008, especially 2004-2006? The first and main character is a constant "rotten egg" smell. The second sign would be corrosion or turning black metal, including plumbing, el, jewelry, hinges and guitar strings, etc., sulfur also equips the air conditioning coil early. Another thing you can do to check is to get to the back of the drywall. You can do this on ceilings or partially finished basements and garages. If you can get to the back of the drywall to see if you see Knauf or ASTM C36 stamped on it.

The answer to the question is poisonous Chinese drywall in NC? The answer is yes. In July 2006, a freighter called Star Djervanger was anchored in Wilmington NC after a trip from China. Its cargo was about 9,000 tonnes of drywall, enough to build about 2000 homes. It is also estimated that several ships loaded with drywall has come through the Port of Charleston SC. On 22 April 2009 first North Carolina Family files a trial with toxic Chinese drywall in Holly Springs NC. The plaintiffs Daniel and Mary Flannigan has filed a legal action against Stafford Custom Homes in Southern Pines, NC. The pair claim they have noticed a "rotten egg" smell eggs shortly after moving into their new house. The Stafford staff said it came from a water heater. Stafford Replaced water heater. So evaporator coil for AC rusted out after 3 years. Many metal thing in Flannigan house were black, including jewelry and guitar strings. The couple said they are experiencing serious headache. The Flannigan's is sued for compensatory and punitive damages.

It is estimated that around 100,000 homes are affected by this toxic Chinese drywall. So the vast majority seem to be in Florida and the Gulf coast, but wherever there was a housing boom, which is relatively close to a port of entry may be susceptible. As of this writing none has been identified in my city of Charlotte NC but all our inspectors continue to look for signs on houses built between 2001 and 2008.
