you can put electric guitar strings on your acoustic-electric guitar? will it still work?

jjust so I got a new acoustic electric gutiar and I just poped one of the strings on the accident, will I be able to connect it to my amp, but I dont have "acoustic-electric guitar strings" I have "acoustic guitar stings" and "electric guitar strings" which should I use and why?
