Test guitars in a store?

Well I've never actually tried the guitars in a shop before. It is because I have 2 guitars: a nooby, entry-level electrical (Star Fender Telecaster) from Best Buy and a pretty good, cheap acoustic (Gibson Maestro). I've been playing for about 2 years and I need a new electric. If you just go in and take a off the wall rack or do you need permission first? I would not even put it in because I could not care about the pickups at this time, it's about how well your body is (Dean ML AT3000). Just curious is all, thanks for any helpful answers. I took Dean from a list I made (just look was a small factor), but there is a list:)

Having worked in many music stores I can tell you that we always appreciate it when someone asks first. It's just polite to do so. You will normally be greeted when you walk in, and when you ask you will usually get a response to the "safe!" or "go for it!". Be sure to tell the sales person you wish to purchase in the near future, and tell them the price ranges you're looking in. They will usually be more than glad to help you and will suggest several possibilities. When you look at your first "good" electric guitar (star caster is junk), be sure to try several different models. You may have picked the dean of looks, but it is not the best way to choose a guitar. Choose a guitar on how it feels when you play it and how it sounds plugged in. You should deal with the pickups and electronics, because it is an electric guitar is all about! It is much easier to buy a good guitar with a good transport than getting a good guitar and have to change the pickups, because they do not have the right sound for you. Be choosy, after all, would you play this guitar a lot, and probably for a long time. Take your time and play many different guitars, and go to several stores until you find some that really stick in your mind. Walk back a few times and play it. Do not be in a rush to get a new guitar. Being patient really wants to help you choose the best instrument for you
