No sound from MacBook Pro’s audio out?

I was hooking up my guitar to record some stuff in Garage Band the other day and I accidentally plugged the input into the output jack and vice versa. Upon hearing no sound from the computer, I tried turning up the volume on my guitar amp since my amp has been shorting out lately as well. When I finally realized how idiotic I was, I switched the plugs to their respective jacks. The input still works fine but now the audio out doesn’t produce any sound. The built in speakers work fine so I still have sound, but whenever I plug speakers into the audio out, I have to turn them all the way up to hear even the slightest noises. Did I completely fry my audio jack? Is that even possible? Is there a fix for this or should I just take it to the Apple Store?

I’m running Mac OS X Leopard on an almost year old MacBook Pro with an Intel audio card.

If it’s not yet a year old, it’s still under warranty. Definitely take it to the Apple Store and have them check it out.
